ONE ADAM ONE - "Where Do I Begin"

Review by Wolf Georgia - MUSIC FARMER 5

A Journey through Love, Longing, and the Heart of Americana

The ever-evolving landscape of alt-country gets a fresh breath of life with "Where Do I Begin," the debut EP from the veteran duo ONE ADAM ONE, comprising the talents of Adam Reichmann and Todd Schnitzer. Previously members of the acclaimed Missouri outfit Nadine, the pair have now forged their own path, imbuing their distinct Midwestern sound with a modern edge.

"Where Do I Begin" offers listeners a bold and evocative journey through love, longing, and the trials of the human condition. The EP kicks off with the hypnotic title track, which features strummed guitars, pulsing drums, and reverb-drenched vocals. Reichmann's lyrics transport the listener from a snowbound Boston airport to the mysterious foothills of Pocatello, expertly painting a vivid tableau of isolation and the desire for connection.

The title track transitions seamlessly into "Living Between The Lines," an anthem for navigating the chaos of contemporary life. The track's driving rhythm and raw opening line, "It's a fucked up world, we're just living in it," captures the dissonance of our times. "Hollywood Ending" follows, with its darkly loping rhythm and biting cynicism, illustrating the bitter underbelly of the American Dream.

Listeners will find solace in "Cold Murmurs," a folksy gem adorned with syncopated guitars, chiming keys, and steady drumming. The song celebrates the beauty found in nature and the resilience of the human spirit, with lyrics like "the trees all breathe in the night/And the choirs of insects/Sing so tightly/Songs for the darkness/And songs for the light." The EP concludes with the wistful "Platte River," a tender ballad infused with organ tones and a sha la la refrain, reminiscent of Tom Petty's timeless songwriting.

Throughout "Where Do I Begin," Reichmann's introspective lyricism is perfectly complemented by Schnitzer's innovative production. The duo adeptly fuses fuzz guitars, synths, and drum layering to create a soundscape that is nostalgic and forward-thinking - all at once. Fans of artists like Big Star, The War on Drugs, Wild Pink, and Kevin Morby will find so much to appreciate in ONE ADAM ONE's genre-defying sound.

In just five tracks, "Where Do I Begin" showcases the undeniable chemistry between Reichmann and Schnitzer, who have crafted an intimate, poignant portrait of modern life. With this masterful debut, ONE ADAM ONE emerges as a force to be reckoned with in the world of alt-country, and we eagerly await what they have in store for us next.
